Good day, friends. My heart is heavy with all the terrible news from Israel and Gaza. I’ll quote a go-to phrase used in yoga classes everywhere and say the Sanskrit words Lokah Samastah Sukinho Bhavantu, meaning “May All Beings Everywhere Be Happy and Free”, a notion that seems impossible at present, but we all must show each other kindness and love as we work toward something far more ideal than what is happening right now.
I’ll keep this post short and sweet as we all have far better things to do and worry about, but let’s have a moment of distraction if you feel like it.
First, I visited A Current Affair, the high-end vintage show that took place in Brooklyn this past weekend on a gloomy Saturday. Nothing lifts my mind and mood like beautiful old clothes and the people who love them as much as I do. I got an amazing Grecian Bill Tice dress, but I could have gone crazy there because all of my favorite reference points from Halston to Issey Miyake to Geoffrey Beene were there. I spotted many Romeo Gigli pieces, so I thought I’d use some old Gigli ads above as inspiration for dreamier, more ethereal times. According to Wikipedia, “his understated and romantic designs, featuring shawl collars, dropped shoulders and narrow fitted trousers or tulip-shaped skirts worn with flat shoes were seen as the antithesis of the 1980s power dressing trend, and some predicted he would become the Armani of the 1990s.” I love that sentiment, a move towards something softer, and after all, I think we all could use some swaddling right now. Look at Linda in that coat. Love this whole vibe. Snuggly chic for scary times.
Oh, and here’s something. I’ve been slowly transitioning my closet into cold-weather wear, and I’m really enjoying the sort of “in-between” sparsity of my current closet. There’s a stillness and quiet that is a nice respite from the stranglehold of hangers and the boxes of boots. Usually, I bring all of my summer clothes into storage and take out all of my winter clothes, but this season, I’m thinking about a wardrobe for very in-between days/times where less is feeling like so much more. But just in case sparsity isn’t your Bottega bag, here are a few fab things you may want to pick up as Fall gets in full swing, as well as the perfect song for the moment. Turn it up:
Something crimson. I love this dress, and crimson is a big color for Fall, as well as a Gigli favorite (why I snoozed on the deep red knit maxi at Current Affair will haunt my spirit for a while). Since I don’t wear a ton of true red, I’d go here.
Something buttoned up but easy. This slouchy blazer from H&M means business in the best way. Love the oversized fit, and the quality is nice, too.
Something pretty/pinky. This MAC lipstick is a nice Fall neutral.
Something shady. These shades from Vehla give instant cool kid vibes, and love the mix of aviator detailing with my favorite tortoise plastic frames.
Something sleek/stretchy. These boots aren’t a deal in any way, but I love how slim they are and would look amazing with rolled-up jeans and a blazer.
And speaking of jeans and blazers, just took this screenshot the other day as it was on Net-A-Porter, and I adore this outfit; each and every piece is perfect. Sleek, cool, classic, sexy. I’m getting big-time vintage YSL vibes (my all-time favorite vintage vibe, PS) from this quartet, and I’m posting this banner of goodness on my virtual corkboard as inspiration whenever I need it. I can see it with those sunglasses from above, too. Very un-Gigli, but also pretty damn chic. You could wear this look just about anywhere and look just right.
Well, friends, I wish you a peaceful couple of weeks. I know that feels insane right now, but that’s my wish for all. I’ll be back in a few but be kind. XO
Ah ever since I watched the Beckham docuseries I’ve been seriously drooling over her denim and that screenshot you took captured a perfect pair! Show us the dress you bought at the vintage clothing fair! Also that Mac lipstick looks like the perfect pink!
