Happy (Fourth of) July, my gorgeous friends. And happy bday to my fellow Cancerians. Though I’m not big on well, going big on the birthday, I like to honor another year around the sun by making a change. That’s why I just went blonde for the first time ever.
Throughout the years, I have never thought of myself as a blonde. Intense brunette and edgy redhead? You bet. But blonde? No. Too common. Too vanilla. Too sexy in a way I never felt as a Jewish woman. But since falling in love with Annabelle Dexter Jones’s character’s hair on “Succession,” I pondered blonde. And this week, I bit the blonde bullet.
Because though I may not be adventurous in the jumping out of a plane or rock climbing sense, I love a style scene change. My gut guides me with information, and I just go.
For some, I know changing or updating a look is a terrifying challenge. For me, it’s always been something fun and fearless. I’m never afraid to try a new cut, color, or silhouette. I trust myself more than I ever have, and for those who know me well, you know decisiveness is essential to my happiness. I suppose I have good instincts, and that’s why expressing myself with style is so joyful. I am comfortable in my skin, which allows me to just have fun with fashion. and not get too caught up in this or that. I was wearing my Black Crane gauzy caftan (as one does) on a walk with Gidget the other day and felt so good and so elated to be wearing something so chicly shapeless. As I was walking, I passed a young woman in a strappy, tight mini-dress and some high-heeled sandals, and it hit me. I am so happy to be in my “fuck you” vs. “fuck me” period of life. That’s what unapologetic living is all about. (PS Don’t come for me. I know that woman may have been thinking, “fuck you” too. She was just far more snatched than I care to be at present.)
But back to instincts, you might be at a point in your life where you should give them a chance to shine. What does your gut tell you? What does your heart want? How can you stay grounded and rational while still dreaming big? And when I say “fuck you,” I mean it may be time to stop dressing for the person you think you ought to be and just dress exactly for who you are right now, with no fucks given. This edition of UA has lots of options to show you how.
So that’s enough self-help for today. Now on to some of the great stuff I’m loving so far this Summer.
As a longtime redhead, my makeup needed a refresh for the blonding. I was craving a neutral pink lipstick and found this iconic Revlon shade, Pink in the Afternoon. Great for blondes and the prettiest pale pink. Lovely drugstore find.
I’m a green-eyed gal, so I love green liners and shadows, but it felt a bit intense with the red hair. But now I’m loving it and discovered this Hourglass shadow stick at a recent launch event. It’s called Aurora, and it’s a quick pick-me-up. Line the lower lid, then dot it on your upper lid for a pretty pop.
These Matteau pants ain’t cheap but spotted them on Leandra Medine, and I love them. They. are major and look great with a lingerie top like this one or an undone button-down and tucked in.
My friend Meg knows how to make a fab Summer frock. I just love this whisper of a dress with that great neckline.
Oh, and these shorts. I love how low and loose they are. Laidback luxe and so perfect with a striped button-down. Thumbs way up for these, too. Such a cool look, non?
Or how about a pair of men’s chinos? These are classic, and I dig the fit.
Or these white overalls from Dickies? Love the elastic straps, and the white is so crisp.
I snagged this bodysuit on the Goop sale to wear with my gold coin necklace and a skirt like this or my Nooworks white painter’s pants.
This bag is a fun homage to my need for quiet of late.
And this silk caftan is a gorgeous shade\ of brown that is calling my name. I’m. really into minimalist shapes when it comes to dresses, so I love this one.
And these sunnies are glorious and would look badass with the blonde hair.
So another year, another hair color. In all candor, I’m thrilled to be feeling resilient and open to trying new stuff and keep challenging myself to live my most unapologetic life. Maybe blondes really do have more fun, and I’ll sure have fun finding out. XO
Love the blond hair....very cute and perky on you!
